Polo Forest is located in Vijaynagar Taluka of Sabarkantha District, Gujarat. It is a dense forest hardly 150 km from Ahmedabad, Gujarat housing 200 species of rare birds, more than 250 varieties of medicinal herbs, Archeological Monuments, serene water bodies, hills and lot more… This ancient Polo State was build on the bank of river Harnav aaround 10th Century by the Parihar Kings of Idar which was later conquered in the 15th Century by the Rathore Rajputs of Marwar. Polo State was later on renamed Vijaynagar between 1864 and 1877. This princely state of Vijaynagar ruled by Rathore Dynasty was under the Mahi Kantha Agency, during British Raj. The last ruler of Vijaynagar State signed the assession to the Indian Union on 10th June 1948.
The word Polo is derived from Pol, the Marwari word which means “Gate” signifying it as a gateway between Rajputana & Gujarat.
Polo Forest is spreaded over 400 sq. km deciduous forest which is lush green between September to December after the monsoon. Polo Forest provides a rich wildlife experience because of more than 450 species of medicinal plants 275 species of birds, 30 species of mammals & 32 species of reptiles all living under the diversity of Polo Forest. During winter, migratory birds occupy the forest.
