Every day I come to office and the fear of food full of oil, gravy & artificial colors starts sharply before lunch break every day and most of the days it ends up with ill feeling….loading heavy on stomach.  But good news is if you are working in Central Business District of Ahmadabad i.e. Ashram Road, then “Devarsh” located Opp. Old RBI, Near City Gold Cinema, Ashram Road is your destination for homely, healthy & stomach friendly food.

The story “Devarsh” as told by Mr. Dakshesh Desai is that he was doing well in Dyes & Colors business and happy with the progress every time. But one fine day, with the change in government policy making Chinese dyes & chemicals cheaper in India forced him to discontinue his business immediately in 1997.

Her wife Vaishali stood with her husband Dakshesh during this rough time & gave him an idea of starting food joint to substitute the existing business.  Immediately, the office from where dyes & chemicals business was carried out was converted to food joint.

Initially they started serving khaman dhokla, sev khamni  sourced from Shreeji Khaman.  (Daksheshbhai still acknowledges the help extended by Mukeshbhai of Shreeji Khaman for starting alternate business) at that time, apart from khaman and sev khamni, they offered Punjabi Samosa which was prepared at their kitchen but looking to the very less turnover of business vaishali started serving Puri Bhaji – the dish which she was good at. Thereafter, Aloo Paratha & Pyaj Paratha was introduced which clicked & got appreciation & repeated customers.

Paratha is a type of flatbread.  The name derived from the Hindi word “Parat” which means Layers and “atta” which means dough.  It originated from north India which is dominant wheat growing region & it is a staple food since of northern India since historic times.  Parathas are known as Parantha, Parontay, or Porota in different regions.  It is known as Farata in Srilanka & Maldives. Paratha are usually made with dough & folded in ghee ( Purified butter) to create the layers, then cooked on a tava(Pan) till it becomes brown and fluffy.  It can be made plain or stuffed with various ingredients such as vegetables, cheese, paneer or even meat.

aloo paratha at devarsh

Stuffed Paratha at Devarsh are handsomely stuffed with Mashed aloo & Pyaj (Onions) mixed with perfect blend of Indian Spices.  It is shallow fried with Pure desi ghee & served with dahi (Curd) , phudina(Mint) chutney & Onion Salad.  The stuffed paratha served at Devarsh are crispy from outside.  The size of paratha is so big & heavily stuffed that it makes a perfect wholesome meal for two.

Chas (Butter Milk) is also excellent with a perfect mixture of Salt & Spices and goes well with stuffed paratha.

Meanwhile , daksheshbhai got another shock when her wife Vaishali left for heavenly abode in 2007 especially during the most critical year being his son Devarsh in 12th & daughter Niyati in 10thstandard.  He bravely handled this critical situation , played a role of father & mother both which resulted in glittering results of Devarsh & Niyati.  Devarsh studied Bio Medical Engineering & was meritorious student throughout his study.  He got good job opportunity with top corporate houses and also admission in US Universities for further studies.  He opted to join his father & has been handling kitchen since then.

Devarsh Aloo Paratha“Devarsh” is housed in fore court of Heritage Building of 1908 which adds character and ambiance of the place, surrounded with lot of plants some aging more than 90 years old.  Mostly visited by employees & businessman on and near ashram road, Daksheshbhai adds that even those people who are transferred outside Ahmedabad don’t forget to visit our place if they happen to visit Ahmedabad.

Ambience is OK . Despite having to sit on a plastic chair and table and situated on one of the busiest roads of Ahmedabad, it is one of the most calm place to eat. Carefully prepared food by Devarsh & all time pleasant smile of  daksheshbhai is top notch.  Believe me this place will not disappoint you especially if you are looking for pure food & friendly environment.

Highlights : Today, we ordered Paneer Pyaaz Paratha which was really thick and loaded with delicious stuffings.  Spiced paneer & finely chopped onions and garlic with a perfect balance of crispiness & softness was mind blowing.  Normally onions in stuffed paratha is over cooked…but here I found crisp onions which gave heavenly feeling at every bite. It comes with dahi & mint chutney. But being Kathiyawadi, I ordered masala chas too.  I highly recommend to order for Paneer Pyaz Paratha because of its unique combination which I have never experienced before.

Service :

It takes about 15-20 minutes to serve your order as everything is freshly prepared.  Staff was really polite.  Daksheshbhai , Owner personally supervise the whole affair with smiling face.

I would love to visit this place again for its yummy food and warm service. This place is simply perfect for dinning during work hours and hangout with friends.
